Hello readers,

This blog is part of my classroom activity on Archetypal Criticism by Northrop Frye.

(1)The term “Archetypal” means, a literary device, an archetype is a reoccurring symbol or motif throughout literature that represents universal pattern of human nature. It can also refer to the original model on which all other things of the same kind are based. “Archetypal criticism” means denotes recurrent narrative design, identifying pattern of action, character types, themes, and image in literature as well as in myths, dreams and even social rituals. According to Carl Jung archetype means “collective unconscious”. The Archetypal critic observes the symbols, myths pattern of action and applies it in literary work.

(2) Northrop Frye compares ‘Physics with nature’ and ‘Criticism to Literature’. In which physics is an organized body of knowledge about nature but student of physics says that he/she is learning physics not nature. Same criticism is systematic study of literature
.
(3) Criticism is an organized body of knowledge which mentions relation with history and philosophy. Philosophy is for idea and history for events. History deals with the events of past and the action, while philosophy is deals with idea and the knowledge. With the help of history and philosophy the writer creates literature. Thus, literature is connecting with history and philosophy.

(4) Inductive method is based on observation. It is move from particular to general. It is also called backward movement. Northrop Frye giving example of grave digging scene from “Hamlet” to explain this method. First Hamlet looks Yorick’s sull, then he fight with leartes due to Ophelia’s death and confess his love for her. So, in which Hamlet is a Archetypal hero who is ready to die for his love.

(5) Deductive method move from general to particular. It is based on “logic”. Music has rhythm and painting have pattern. We might not understand music at once but we might understand painting at first looks. Music travels in time and painting in space because we can see the full painting at a movement but for music we have to hear it. Once the music is over we can see the pattern but in painting we can perceive rhythm in it. Rhythm of painting and pattern of music we have understood very well
